FPSO

The floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) system is a floating facility (sometimes built from a modified oil tanker vessel) used for offshore hydrocarbon processing and storage. FPSOs are designed as mobile hydrocarbon processing facilities and are able to receive hydrocarbons, process and store them until they can be offloaded via tanker or transported through a pipeline towards onshore facilities. These floating facilities allow companies to produce oil in remoter regions because they are easy to install, and do not require heavy pipeline infrastructure to export oils as compared to fixed platforms.

As an offshore platform, two of the greatest hazards FPSOs can encounter are on-board fires and explosions. A combination of tight confines and flammable gases in close proximity to offshore personnel living quarters means that installations and facilities on-board FPSOs have to be sturdily-built to be flame and explosion-proof.
